These come from Curepipe, Mauritius. They come from a very high, nearly 45 foot tree. In Fall, bunches of ripe fruit, drupes are harvested. The berries are dried in the sun. Origins: Originally from South America, this tree was introduced in Mauritius in the first half of the 19th Century. It has started growing and developing in the wild, the climate is so good for it. Use in cooking: crushed, the berries have a slightly resinous aroma, between pepper and genever. They will add a warm note to salmon or fish soup. Wonderful on a carpaccio of zucchini, in a carrot soup or on pork. Interestingly, these are marvelous to add unexpected depth to a dish of vanilla ice cream. | | | |
