4Worth it, but could be better.  May 28, 2009 By Steaphan Greene
I would only point out two real flaws in this item.

1) It uses 6 AAA batteries. 6 is a weird number. You can't get 6-packs of batteries, and chargers generally handle 4 or 8 AAAs. Also AAAs are far more expensive than AAs for the power. A power pack for these which used 4 AAs would have been much better all around.

2) It does not mark or indicate the grind size in any way. You have to either eye the separation of the grind gap, or grind a bit, then adjust.

I would also say that it takes a moment to see how to load this thing (or change the batteries) without grinding some pepper - the trick is not to tighten the bottom on until you turn it back right-side-up. This isn't really a problem, though.

Overall though, these are great, and certainly worth the money.

Also, this "Elite" version is worth the extra money over the non-"Elite" one.

5LOVE IT  Jan 18, 2008 By Furfur
I love this pepper mill. However, I do not reccommend dropping it in a pot of water! My first one did not survive it. :D But the quality is great, I love that it is one you flip over since the mills that have the pepper coming out from the bottom leave pepper on the counter.

5As near to perfect as I have used.  Mar 14, 2009 By andiesenji
I have many pepper grinders, including other battery powered ones, but this one is by far the best.
I love that there is no discharge from the bottom of the grinder as this means it is much cleaner and I don't have to have an extra small dish on the counter to keep the bottom from being contaminated by whatever is on the counter. I am a constantly wiping down and cleaning my counters and it is annoying to have to move the grinders and the saucers in which they sit each time.
I purchased one of these for a Christmas gift for my best friends and they love it too.
I plan on buying additional ones for my "fancy" peppers but first wanted to be sure the grinder would handle the different sized peppercorns. It does just fine except with long pepper which has to be broken in pieces before going into the grinder but it is not a big problem for me.
So far the battery life is better than in other grinders I have.

5Why your pepper mill might stop grinding  Nov 15, 2010 By Joan Bonahoom "June March"
When I first purchased the Trudeau I loved it but it began to stop during grinding and eventually stopped totally. I was frustrated but had become so accustomed to using it that I purchased another. My boyfriend had a thought and it was correct about why the device malfunctioned. If you hold the peppermill over a pot or pan while your are cooking, the steam gradually damages the gears...they get wet, rusty and clogged. When I got my new one, I was careful to grind the amount I need into a small spice plate and it has worked for over 2 years now.

5Very pleased  Sep 08, 2009 By J. Stephen
I got both salt and pepper mills and am very happy with them. They're identical except that the salt mill has a silver body and the pepper mill has a black one.

Operation is great - you just flip it over and it starts grinding. Since the opening is on the top, it also doesn't leave any mess on my counter, unlike conventional mills. I love that I can keep these by the stove for cooking, then move them to the table for serving. They look at home in both settings and work great for either setting. They're large and easy to hold, especially the pepper mill with it's rubberized black base. My father has arthritis and couldn't dream of using a manual mill, but these are no problem.

They put out a good quantity of ground salt/pepper and the grind is fairly easy to adjust. I found that it helps a lot to have the mill running when making the grind finer since the coarse chunks still in the grinding wheels will prevent them from being tightened very much.

Using six batteries, as others have mentioned, is weird because you can't buy six batteries. Fortunately, if you buy both mills, you'll need twelve batteries and that's a multiple of four and that works out fine. I bought some four packs of the rechargable Sanyo Eneloop batteries to power mine and they still haven't run down after about a year (love Eneloops btw, consider using them if you want rechargables).

Filling the mill and replacing the batteries both involve removing the bottom and pulling out the battery holder. At that point you can swap in new batteries or pour in more salt/pepper and put the thing back together. The biggest problem is that you have to flip it over to do this and flipping it over is also what activates the grinding motor. So you have to unlock the bottom cap first then flip it, and reverse that procedure when putting it back together. Or you just have to wipe up a little salt or pepper. Either way, it's never bothered me but it's worth noting. It's also easy to overfill and you can't get it back together if you do, but I only have to pour a little out when I do and everything is fine.

PS - I used to scoff at the idea of a salt mill, thinking "WTF? It's not like salt goes bad or is better when freshly-ground!" Then I started using coarse sea salt regularly and realized that sometimes I needed salt with a finer grind for better texture or faster dissolving. And that's what a salt mill is great for :)
